Low End Spirit SSD speed

sandrosandro Member

Hello,
I have a Italy 2GB SSD VPS with LES and I only get 65MB/s as I/O speed.
What do you get? Even with other locations.

Comments

  • I was with hosthatch just a month ago and then i had 1.5GB/s

Sorry I was referring to other LES clients of course.

Lowendspirit has a support forum for these kind of questions.

    What speeds are you expecting?

What arguments are you running dd with? Assuming dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync is what you're using, then your I/O speed is slow for a SSD.

Though, do you actually need more than that?

  • sandrosandro Member

No I was just curious. Anyway I was using the freevps script. With dd I get 210MB/s.

You're paying the price of a coffe with LES, you can't conplain.

Ofcourse he can complain, nevermind the price.
He could also try looking for something cheaper. :)

Jokes aside, if you feel that it is not up to par with your expectations: post a topic in the LES forum or submit a ticket(and face the chance of an extra charge).

I think he didn't. He just asked if its normal which is totally okay.

I read that as "with dd I get 210 MB/s" with the freevps script I get less.

conclusion = don't use the freevps script :)

but regardless that server has 253 VPS running on it, they are not sata3 ports, it is mdadm raid with bitmapping enabled, it is not a HW Raid + cache raid 10 latest gen monster or you would be paying a LOT more :)

Reads are not bad though, and that's what is more important IMO:

     Timing cached reads: 14446 MB in 2.00 seconds = 7236.71 MB/sec
     Timing buffered disk reads: 1116 MB in 3.01 seconds = 371.36 MB/sec

    Reads are good.

What's the bitmap chunk size? by increasing to 128-256 MB you could vastly improve the write speed. Also if this is a RAID5/6 then stripe_cache_size becomes important.

chunk size is 64mb I will increase it to 256 MB, thanks for the tip :)

  • Or just remove the bitmap, I'm not sure how useful it really is on an SSD array? Maybe saves some write cycles, but how often is it really rebuilding?

On the other hand, I sort of doubt it would make a huge difference in speeds either way, with SSDs.

Low ram is often influencing badly dd "tests". Depends on the arguments.

Those I/O speeds are fine. Most people never even utilize higher I/O speeds or have no use of them. My VPS with BuyVM gets 800MB/s (SSD) but I really have no use for SSD at all.

As long as you don't notice any significant impact on your services (on the VPS) then the I/O speed is fine.

What? You mean to tell me that people should stop hosting their Wordpress blogs on SSDs and actually switch to something that's not overkill, like a basic VPS?

High DD test results are just marketing tactics & most of the time it's due to cache controller memory.95%+ of the LET members on SSD or SSD cached vps are those who never needed it & will probably won't need it for years. That is why we mostly see DD porn & other such crap in low end market only.Ye you will find lot of noobs here for whom a DD less than 1 Gb/s is unacceptable & they would argue with you for hours to prove those points which won't stand a leg in front of a person who understands how DD tests, disk read & write speeds work. Many times I have seen providers making decent offers where they have array of 8 HDDs or more in RAID 10 & yet below comments are "SSD or SSD cached?", "They are not using SSD or SSD cached disks so performance would be awful"

I completely boycott those providers who use DD marketing tools. I do not have any services with any provider on LET.I just come here to seek knowledge(there are quite a few knowledgeable people around here) & share a bit of knowledge I have regarding hosting. One of those most helpful guys is @MCHPhil who always helps & gives me tips regarding hosting related stuff.
