Since this is a VPS by the Datacenter we are limited to what they offer, i would have taken 6 also if i could.

    I got this with "http://124.248.212.94:8080/tools"

    PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data.

Because the Google Edge in Hongkong seems to not reply to ping:

    edistest:~# ping 8.8.8.8
    PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data.

    (8.8.4.4 does though)

    4 weeks.
Yes, it had a not so great reputation in the past mainly for hosting spammers - Since we don't use their IPs it should not matter however :)

  • jaxyanjaxyan Member

    i am just a newbie.
how to make it that only use their connectivity but do not use their ip?

  • We have our own IPs from RIPE.

  • AmfyAmfy Member

@jaxyan: The provider can put the IPs from Edis in their router and then Edis can use their own IPs on their servers in HK

SunnyVision severely limits mainland china and international traffic (usually to 2mbps) with their "100mbps" ports -- you'll get that typically only from routes via HKIX, or they route to the US first.

Ping is so fast... when will this be available?

  • unusedunused Member
    edited June 2012

@jcaleb www.36cloud.com is the official "Sunny Vision" solusVM type product ( $$ ) if you want to try the same location. (They have a per day pricing model too)

Personally though, the network isn't optimal unless you are living in Hong Kong and only want Hong Kong traffic - it's worthless for Mainland China, and for pulling in from International due to the sunnyvision limitations.

  • @unused said: Personally though, the network isn't optimal unless you are living in Hong Kong and only want Hong Kong traffic

You are free to recommend another ISP which NOT charging 10k HKD per month - i got over 100 quotes and most were around or above that

  • jcalebjcaleb Member

@unused their vps package is expensive. I'll just wait for Edis HK =) HK is much faster ping than SG.

Anyone offering cheap out of HK is likely jumping on HE no? Pretty sure that was the TL;DR of a thread a while back... HE got like a 10Gbit run there and sold it more than a few times over causing it to be pretty crappy and requiring a back peddle to the US.

    Maybe they fixed it?

@William - I wasn't making a specific recommendation one way or the other, just a general comment on the state of things in HK. You're right, if you want premium bandwidth/connectivity in HK, you have to pay for it - that's just the way it is. (As you can see by your sunnyvision routing to the USA and back to HK from mainland China, and the caps on international)

Yes, they run 100G lambda however iirc between LA and HK iirc.
HE is not that bad to the US actually :)

@unused said: You're right, if you want premium bandwidth/connectivity in HK

I don't even want Premium, solid working connectivity is fine - Sure Sunnyvision is not the best but it works (see @huluwa which got 1,2MB/s down on a Mainland line)

@unused said: As you can see by your sunnyvision routing to the USA and back to HK from mainland China

Hm? I'm not sure where you see this, i checked both Netcom/Unicom, Telecom and something named China Railway and all of them go directly to HK (CN->HK) and HK->CN without any US hops.

    @unused said: caps on international

Can't see this either, i get solid 35Mbit over a Asianetcom line in Amsterdam from the testfile (which is likely on a even more shared line, so not that bad)

@William - @huluwa is the only one who got 1.2mb, and that's probably over a smaller mainland ISP peering on HKIX. Have you looked at the traces I put in and from others in this thread?

IMHO, even solid connectivity at low cost isn't going to be cost effective in HK. Mainland users will opt to go to Los Angeles for UT/CT peering or Japan. Korea has some good options if they just want to host sites without Mainland content restrictions but has its own international transit failings.

Take a look at this to get an Idea of ping connectivity to your test ip: http://ping.chinaz.com/ it's currently down for most of the mainland.

It looks like it could be SunnyVision just not yet having updated prefix filters, but that's nothing new. Unfortunately their reputation on the HK/Mainland side is well known.

Agreed though, at your price point no one is going to argue!

Both on gigE ports to gigE+ ---- also both start out at ~20mbps and ramp down quickly. Could be traffic shaping is now in place for you, which is known to happen from time-time with SV.

Don't mean to be negative, I hope it goes well. Just an FYI that you'll need to stay on top of things there like no other given the location & upstream.

  • Please test Ping/Ping6/traceroute to:

    103.11.140.3
    2400:8800:1f08::1

    Worse/Better?

    It is in SIngapore.

I don't feel really well with going with Sunnyvision anymore and look for alternatives, and a friend of me runs his network in SG.
Upstream Telstra and PCCW, v6 enabled.
