Another French budget dedi provider! FirstHeberg

So yesterday I found another French provider which is both budget and not OVH/Online.net or a reseller thereof. This FirstHeberg seems to do everything on their own, which is nice for us.

For those who can't wait, here are the dedicated servers: http://firstheberg.com/dedies/

To test them out I got the cheapest server in stock: http://firstheberg.com/dedies/detail-atom-d525-hdd-2012

When ordering I ran into a little problem, even though they say on their website they accept customers from a lot of countries in Europe, China and the USA, the SMS verification system that needs to verify a phone number only sends to France, Belgium and Autria if my memory serves me well. I got around this limitation by just doing nothing on that order page and navigation to the customer panel, where the invoice was ready to be paid without further ado. Their panel is okay, it proved an rDNS, reinstalls and whatever you might need. As far as I can find they provide a default Windows Server 2008 R2 for free without bitching.

As opposed to the product page I got a single 1TB drive instead of two 500GBs, and I might have DDR2 instead of DDR3, but haven't checked that closely so I could be wrong. They offer a 100mbit line of which a mere 10mbit is guaranteed, but there is a gigabit port, on the serverbear you can find the speeds which range from, out the top of my head, 100KB/s to 45MB/s. Reading their website I think their servers are located in apartments.

I paid one month with paypal, and see what they're further up to.

Are you from the EU, did you pay your invoice with VAT?

  • You don't need to submit the order there - once you reach that page it's in finable in your client panel. I paid 15 euro something, so yes I paid taxes on it. (I'm Dutch.)

Yeah I figured out where to find invoices, while I was poking around it created like six or seven orders there, lol. But I am from outside EU, I contacted them asking if I can pay without VAT/TTC.

How do you figure that "their servers are located in apartments"?

  • Well, have a look at their VPS with unlimited storage starting from EUR4.99

Storage is unlimited, which is exclusivity FirstHeberg!

    • Livraison avec 20 Go. Augmentation par tranche de 10 Go. ** Horaire ouvrable. Selon Disponibilité. Limite technique de 100 Go par VPS distinct

    • Supplied with 20 GB Increase with 10 GB ** business hours. According Availability. Technical limit of 100 GB per separate VPS

In other words they'd be glad to give you unlimited storage, if not for that pesky technical limit, I mean didn't you know it's impossible to have more than 100GB per separate VPS.

This does not look so great already...

Reading their website I think their servers are located in apartments.

    translation:

Our datacenter is located in Valenciennes activity Valencanal area in the heart of the city.

Our center has a room of 20 m² accommodation, en route, a generator and inverters to ensure our network and electrical installations redundancy.

The presence of the Scheldt canal just outside the building will eventually cool to better our facilities with renewable energy: natural water.

We have a 1 MVA transformer powered by two high voltage lines using a different way to power our rooms.

The building has large areas that can facilitate our future expansion to 5,000 sqm.

    network is not so great...

    What is the disk model?
Also maybe you still got 2x500, but they just set it up as RAID0?

and I might have DDR2 instead of DDR3

You can check the motherboard model with "dmidecode".

I know you can, but it was late yesterday and I did a quick dmidecode and scrolled past the results. Vaguely I remember seeing DDR2, but can't be sure since it was late. I can't get into the server right now, so I'll have to wait till I get home to check that information.

Sooooo, it looks like I got myself a new dedi now!
    I chose http://firstheberg.com/dedies/detail-core-i3-2100-hdd-2012
Thanks @YellowSloth for finding this provider.

    Did they remove VAT?

@DomainBop yes in the ticket they asked which server I want and then invoiced me for it w/o VAT.

Hébergez votre propre serveur dédié dans notre datacenter en housing managé.

Gee, so an apartment cooled by natural water from a canal is a datacenter :P
This looks interesting, maybe one day will rival OVH :)

I doubt anything will rival OVH. 175,000 servers...?

Well, they plan for 1 mil. They may reach that, however, in my view, their problem lies elsewhere.

    Where to submit inquiry?

  • Their website looks like an OVH ripoff

Very true. Although even if they don't look into their already existing problems I don't see their growth slowing. They will have finished construction of their 3 new data centers by 2017. I just shake my head at the enormity of their operation.

  • yes in the ticket they asked which server I want and then invoiced me for it w/o VAT.

Thanks. I got the i3-2100 SSD. They answered the ticket I opened in 10 minutes.

That was the first thing I thought when I saw it.
I personally have no interest in this host.

You say they have no connection with OVH - a Whois on the domain shows several links to OVH including the use of their nameservers.

OVH provide domain registration and DNS hosting: http://www.ovh.com/fr/domaines/
Nothing weird about another french company using OVH for this.

  • Wouldn't OVH be like GoDaddy for France concerning domains?

I'm not a French company and I have 55 domains registered through OVH (they had a sale on .es and .pl last year) :P

Wouldn't OVH be like GoDaddy for France concerning domains?

Yes. They're the largest French registrar and the 14th largest in the world. Gandi is #2 in France.

FYI FreeHeberg delivered the server 25 minutes after I placed the order. The SSD drive is a OCZ-VERTEX4.

@DomainBop Looks like you got 16 GB of RAM, even though the plan says 8GB?

  • FirstHeberg is a former client of OVH. Now they have opened their Datacenter.

I have a server in FirstHeberg with CentOS, and I have a lot of problem.

OpenVZ is not working, problem with the Kernel.
There is RAID 0 works, RAID 1 does not work.
The "Quota" function does not work

  • @DomainBop i'm curious, what's the motherboard?

They provisioned a server with a SATA II drive by mistake so I opened a ticket and they gave me this server with the extra RAM thrown in 10 minutes later. :)

I would prefer a sata drive of same price, and, of course, wouldnt say no to double memory :)
