Test Your VPS Network Connection!

Hey Guys, LET V2 had one of these threads so I thought it would be a nice thing to have here :)

Use this command to test your network connection:

wget -O /dev/null http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test

Run each test three times and pick the middle ranking result.

BuyVM 128 MB OpenVZ (test):

main@test:~$ wget -O /dev/null http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test

  • @Francisco, does the new Kernel improve the network speed as well?

Reviews | Website | Projects (Minstall, Scripts, etc)
  • yep.

It doubles network speeds from the average ~30MB/sec speeds 60 - 90MB/sec. Granted, not everyone that moved to a .32 OVZ kernel would see this since a lot of it is related to some driver changes we were able to make :)

Once our RAM arrives tomorrow, Anthony will be hauling ass to bring everything up to speed.

  • Our network doesn't quite work like that since we have bonded gbit at our edge.

Since speeds are split evenly 50/50 over each link, it isn't possible to get 2Gbit in a single push, or even a full gbit due to usage. On a 2Gbit commit we peak around 1.4Gbit outbound and ~400Mbit inbound so it'll take up some of it.

If you really feel like doing an epenis contest, i'll gladly whip out in the I/O thread :P

  • OK, I know this may be considered nit picking, but unless your trying to demonstrate the speed of your local network in the data center your vps is in, this test is a bit pointless. Cachefly is a CDN based service, therefore they host CDN servers is most large data centers, meaning most of the time the only thing your testing is how fast your connection is to the server sitting about 500ft from your own in the same data center. (This may not apply in every situation)

For example, you guys are using US VPS and cachefly.cachefly.net resolves to 205.234.175.175, but on my Romanian server it resolves to 204.93.150.150. Also I believe that 205.234.175.175 actually routes to multiple locations as well:

(Note: The route previous to 205.234.175.175 changes in each example showing that its actually routing to different servers, not the same one in each instance.)

    Ex: 1. 6 ge-0-0-12.ar1.ord1.us.nlayer.net (69.31.111.109) 12.023 ms 11.996 ms equinix.xe-4-0-0.cr1.ord1.us.nlayer.net (206.223.119.97) 11.887 ms 7 vip1.G-anycast1.cachefly.net (205.234.175.175) 11.976 ms ae1-30g.ar1.ord1.us.nlayer.net (69.31.111.134) 12.653 ms 12.560 ms

I just wanted to point out that your not really testing the true bandwidth of your server using this method, only the peak speed of your connection to the CDN most likely connected to the same edge router as the server you are on. I had seen a script being used somewhere on this forum before that at least had separate links to different Softlayer DC test files.... wget freevps.us/downloads/bench.sh , also here is my collected list of test files:

    Some Options: wget http://download.thinkbroadband.com/50MB.zip wget http://filetests.hosthop.com/Large_File_Downloads/50M.zip wget http://hostigation.com/100mb.bin wget http://208.110.70.232/100mbit.bin wget http://46.249.55.21/testfiles/1000mb.bin wget http://184.82.225.2/bigtest.tgz wget http://76.73.0.4/100MBtest.zip wget http://pds2g-test.pulsedmedia.com/1GB wget http://188.215.83.87/100mb.bin wget http://en.deltahost.com.ua/100mb.bin wget http://78.46.72.41/100mb.test wget http://174.138.175.114/1gb-file.zip wget http://www.minivps.co.uk/100.dat

A pretty diverse collection, including a test file in .ua (a little different). I do not have time to go through and geo-locate all of these for you, but if your just trying to get an idea of how the routes (and bandwidth) for your server are to different locations this should do the trick.

(Note: I have not tested all of these as of this date, so don't complain if one randomly does't work, I have no control over any of these.)

  • @Aldryic I am on a phone, What's your problem? Who said it was "Pissing contest" just a creative conversation between two providers.

  • @EaseVPS said: Guess Your new Kernels ain't so hot compared to my 5.7

I don't have problems, only thrust. Anyways, be careful what commentary you make to other providers, especially ones with a solid rep. Does nothing but hurt your own image (just like the shouting match between you and DotVPS in that other thread).

You represent your company here, you have to watch what you say to avoid giving yourself a black eye.

  • Yup, I know. Seems a little better this morning. Downloading from the VPS at about 115kB/sec. Hopefully the datacenter will figure out soon what the issue is.

For reference, I don't think it's the box that's the issue. Load is still nothing and scripts on it are running fine.

Network speeds for Xen are based on RAM for some reason. (https://securedragon.net/knowledgebase.php?action=displayarticle&id=45)

Needless to say, all OpenVZ and Xen VPSs (not Backup VPSs) will be throttled next week to 100Mbps (~11MB/s).

    Thanked by 1tcoliveira

Still fast enough for most any website. :)

  • Yeah, you can try to ping the gateway and/or node gateway itself. you'll noticed the response time is very big and fluctuated. :(

@drmike said: Yup, I know. Seems a little better this morning. Downloading from the VPS at about 115kB/sec. Hopefully the datacenter will figure out soon what the issue is.

For reference, I don't think it's the box that's the issue. Load is still nothing and scripts on it are running fine.

Yes! I'm with Carstensz Pyramid Server Now stop asking me please :D
