While being quite an essential service, web hosting seems to be not of much value when it comes to comparing an IT industry companies. Even EIG lags far behind while looking at Forbes top digital 100. Of course, sophisticated, complex services, like AWS, are at another level.

Do you think days of conventional web hosting is over?

And question to current web hosting providers - if you were about to start your business right now, would you offer the same product or wouldn't even look back?

What are the dangers of allowing a server to respond to ping?

When choosing a vm from a cloud provider I often want to check how quickly it can communicate with my main server. This is normally done using the providers 'looking glass' to ping remotely.
However good security practice tends to say allowing ping makes it easier for others to find your server.

So should I allow ping responses from my main server or not?

Hi,

I host some WordPress websites on an Ubuntu 20.04 server and recently my hosting provider blocked my server, because it found malware/phishing on one of the websites:

https://mydomain.com/wp-content/ae/ar/amxqr/NV6588123/

I was given temporary access and deleted all malware files, updated WordPress/Plugins. Provider unblock the server; all is fine now. But… I want to prevent the chance of this happen in the future.

So, are there any tools / scripts that I can run daily using a cronjob that scans my entire server for malware and virus? Specially the ones affecting mostly WordPress websites?

Any advice to have a daily routine for check / scan, is welcome. Thanks!

FastestVPN LTD, initially often priced at 5$, eventually raised to 15$-20$, sometimes even 30$.
Right now it's back at 12$ on DealMirror, so grab it in case you are interested.

Not the "fastest" VPN indeed but reaching fair enough speeds. Better than using your average free VPN (except, perhaps WS Free or KeepSolid).

I don't think the "money back guarantee" applies to LTDs tbh. Don't count on that.

I have searched on Google, most of the blogs says Cloud Hosting allows you to spread your data across multiple, interconnected servers, located across a wide geographical area.
Is it like that if our visitor is from US then cloud hosting will connect to US or the nearest location to ensure better speed? If it is then some providers also sells Cloud VPS but we get a fixed location in that like Germany , US , Finland etc.

Please tell me real Defination of Cloud Hosting and what is the difference between cloud and shared hosting. and if we take a cloud vps and install any panel on that and sell that panel to other people then that is called cloud hosting or shared hosting?

Hi

I ordered a server from unrealservers
I get ip a.b.c.120~a.b.c.125
netmask:255.255.255.255
gateway:100.64.20.141

I install pve7 on the server and assign a.b.c.120 to vmbr0
The server is working fine

When I created a vm to install alpine linux and did not assign a.b.c.121 to the vm, the system did not generate a route because the gateway and ip were not in the same cidr

So I tried ip route add default via 100.64.20.141 dev eth0 onlink

But vm still can't access the network, even can't ping a.b.c.120

When I try to capture the network packets via tcpdump
I found that when vm ping 1.1.1.1
will generate arp request (1.1.1.1 tell a.b.c.121)

I suspect that unrealservers is using mac filtering
I opened a ticket, but the staff replied me that they are not using mac filtering and suggested me to turn off br's stp
When I turned off the stp, the problem was still not solved

I don't know how to continue to troubleshoot this problem

Does anyone else have the same problem?
Can anyone give me some advice?

I just noticed Contabo has a traffic limit of 32TB on their VPS services. I don't remember seeing that few years ago. I have my services with them anyway since years, so I don't bother checking their website.

Just curious to know how new is that traffic limit? when did they introduce it?

Hi,

**HETZNER OPENS NEW LOCATION FOR CLOUD SERVERS **

Our first location in the USA is live! Our cloud products are now available in Ashburn. Together with Nuremberg, Falkenstein and Helsinki, you can now choose between four locations in three different countries and on two continents.

The new U.S. location Ashburn, Virginia, is in a region nicknamed Data Center Alley, one of the most important data center capitals in the world. Now, you can also profit from the strategic location and the global interconnectivity of the location. And North American users can finally get to experience Hetzner with the same low latency and attractive prices that have already made us one of the largest and most trusted cloud hosting providers in Europe.

Looking for mining vps, atleast 4gb ram and 6 core and up.

Price should be 10 dollar or less, I will probably scale up later on and buy more Vps.

If there is GPU on them i would be happy, but I HIGHLY doubt that i can get it for that price.

I did manage to get on for 10 dollars 16 core, but they blocked the mining stuff even though it didnt say anything about that in the TOS. So mining friendly is required.

Someone shared this the other day https://syagent.com/ now before i go any further i have a shared hosting server so i had my doubts of it working. I got my provider to enable ssh for me and went into putty and ran the command that syagent prompted me to run

wget -N --no-check-certificate https://raw.githubusercontent.com/syagent/agent-2/main/install.sh && bash install.sh 618333e926f0ee61517433ac

but my putty replied with this

Please run the agent as root
| The agent will NOT run as root but root required to make the installation success

my hosting provider told me this.

You cannot run commands as root.

If its saying it needs root then its not possible to install it, needs account-level permissions.

Is this because it's a shared hosting deal rather than a vps?

and back to the original question. Is there one that works similar to this for free that is shared hosting friendly?

Still expensive for my taste, but maybe some of you might find it interesting as they have been around for ages.

The end of this year marks ten years in business and we couldn’t have done it without you. TorGuard has never been sold or acquired, and we are proud to say the original founders still work for TorGuard day in and out. We aim to be the dependable VPN provider with the performance and security features you can count on. TorGuard is and always will be the reliable VPN service run by staff members you know and can trust. With your support, we look forward to the next ten years!

Throughout 2021 we’ve witnessed supply shortages and price hikes affecting every industry. TorGuard has never changed our price point and while it seems everyone else is raising costs, we’re doing the opposite. This Black Friday season we’re offering our biggest holiday discount ever, but there is a catch.

This offer is redeemable only with bitcoin.

Why Bitcoin?

Credit cards were not designed for the Internet and are less than ideal for user privacy. Unlike credit card payments bitcoin payments don’t require personal information like an address or phone number. Think of it as paying with cash online. The irreversible nature of bitcoin payments also helps eliminate credit card fraud which is a big problem for merchants in the VPN industry.

TorGuard has always been an avid supporter of Bitcoin. In fact, four years ago the first physical product ever purchased on Bitcoin’s Lightning Network was a TorGuard VPN router. Years later 10s of thousands of users have paid us over the Bitcoin lightning network and continue to do so today.

Fire up a bitcoin wallet and get 60% off TorGuard VPN along with 3 months free @ PrivateMail!

Best Regards,

Because if building even sort of peripheral infrastructure based on some provider, this could turn out as slightly unpleasant surprise afterwards.

Contabo also looks to be charging 3€ per IP, but since I'm not using them, it would be interesting to know if it's a new trend in German IP pricing model and if there are any discounts when ordering more IP addresses.

Many providers offer refunds for one day, three days, or a week or more.

Users are generally able to deploy their application and test its suitability within a few days, but if a refund is delayed because of a ticket, such as a feature that the user wanted but the actual product could not provide, or if the ticket was so slow that the user missed the opportunity, then should the user receive a refund.

There are also abusers who can disrupt the supplier's service in a short period of time and apply for an unconditional refund after the abuse, which is another very unfriendly operation for the supplier.

So I personally think that the refund policy should be defined more specifically, such as no violations, less than a percentage of traffic usage, no ticket processing time, etc.?

What do you think?

We use the AX61 NVME with CL8 and cpanel, its an upgraded server from older model from hetzner,
but this server facing some extremely weird ISSUES,
random freeze with no outputs, that require hard physical reboot as for hetzner saying nothing shows at screen, and when cold boot is done, server boot with not errors.

Nothing shows on logs at the server, CL support tried to see also for few weeks debugging it with no success for what causing the issue.

When server crash it doesnt under any heavy load, could happen also with 7% cpu usage or 19%, its just random could be stable for a week, or two weeks, or few days and then sudden freeze.

now i wonder if it related to CPU compabillity with CL? as i seen in old topic using AMD is hit and miss with cloudlinux for stabillity?
cause i have exact same server that stable for long time..

should i go with enterprise grade cpu of intel?
like -
https://www.hetzner.com/dedicated-rootserver/px93
or maybe -
https://www.hetzner.com/dedicated-rootserver/ax161

or go for another AX-61 NVME? and maybe some faulty hardware invovled like faulty RAM?

I'm pretty lost and would like to get people advise on it?

**Will you consider what is the backup type of web hosting provider using for your packages?
**
For the hosting services, backup methods are much important, should be one of the features that need to be considered as well. Backup copies allow you to restore your data in a reliable and secure way. There are 3 basic backup types: full, incremental, and differential backup.

Full backup: it’s the full copy of your all data that have been done once a week, it means taking a lot of time-consuming and is the least flexible backup method.
Incremental backup: it will copy all the files that were changed after finishing the last backup. The incremental backup method takes a shorter retore window since it copied files fewer than a full backup, so can save up storage space and increase backup speed. However, this way will take more time-consuming to carry out the complete restore.
Differential backup: the principle of this backup is the files have changed since the last full backup. The advantage is shorter restore time over incremental backup. Besides, the amounts of backup data will increase with each copy until the next full backup.

Have you heard about JetBackup? It is software that allows you to backup your cPanel account quickly and efficiently through cPanel Remote. It is also called “point-in-time incremental backup”.
Impressive features:
1. Full account backup
2. Restore MySQL Database backups
3. Restore File Backups

What is the backup method of your plan now?

I was hiring new servers for proxmox ( on OVH), this month I hire two RISE 3 (old - Xeon E5-1650v4, 128GB RAM, 2x 1.92NMVe), but yesterday it got out of line and frustrated the plans because I still need 3~4 servers.

Yesterday OVH changed the RISE line of servers, Xeon E5-1650v4 is discontinued, and now I'm in doubt which configuration to use.
The intention is to run proxmox, on it I will run approximately 30 VM KVM.

On E5-1650v4 I can do this easily.

My budget is limited on $160 USD per month/server, so I could use RISE 1 or RISE 2 (all with 128GB and 2x 1.92 NVMe) https://www.ovhcloud.com/en/bare-metal/rise/prices/

RISE 1 - Intel Xeon-E 2136 - 6c/ 12 t - 3.3GHz / 4.5GHz
RISE 2 - Intel Xeon-D 2141I - 8c/ 16 t - 2.2GHz / 3GHz

To performance equivalent E5-1650v4, which would be better to choose E 2136 or D 2141I?

Hi, Do you support Freedom of Speech? Do you are whistleblower? The END is near..

This doesn't have nothing to do with Criminals, criminals are criminals and that's. What I'm trying to say with this post, is privacy protection will gone.

And who have or offer Hosting focused in Privacy, will need to think a way to turn the situation around. Which will be difficult, most of users thinks privacy is for criminals, yes some of them may abuse of it.

But privacy is a right of us, we have the right to be "anonymous" or have privacy in our Hosting or blog or anything in this life.

Until that hopes for more services like Njal.la, flokinet appear soon, with innovation etc.
**
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/government/eu-legislation-introduced-to-ban-anonymous-domain-registration/

Note: my concern is not criminals (they get caught or get caught, that's a problem for justice, not for those who work honestly). Because whenever these themes or debates come up... people tend to focus a lot on criminals. And that's not what I want or intend with this topic, but for those who need privacy such as Journalists, people who report corruption in government, states, countries, people. This is the focus of privacy, caring for those who protect society and alert to the dangers of what is not seen.

So how will hosting and domain registrars handle this? are you ready? Are they preparing something new?

This Shared Hosting can handle how much real time traffic on a wordpress site ? and how much daily, monthly visitors can it handle?

how much real time traffic, daily visitors, monthly visitors it can handle?

Looks like a new cloud storage service, a child of the pandemic (founded 2020). Just found it today. Anyone using it for a while already?

10 GBs free with unlimited bandwidth (need someone to take them up on this ) and can get more by referring others.

They have some lifetime offers too but I'd be skeptical about these (they might go away sooner than your roi).

Here is how public shared link looks like: https://filen.io/d/d1d22040-f345-423b-81dc-c7105d2fb146#!jnKpMivbKRfBpp0TmClcHM0eNcY5Oh0U

Not sure why they are putting their .exe inside a zip file for the desktop app for Windows but VT says clean https://www.virustotal.com/gui/url/5f9bdf8efccd46f0ba9fd4a3da4e0d79dda5bb993c40abb49d4b20683168785d?nocache=1

Not all folders sync on desktop app, only the Filen Sync folder, the Default folder won't sync anything to local install.

You can control how the sync goes (bi or either direction) which could be useful.

The desktop app should login like we login to Nextcloud but I guess it's because of being a new service.

Now give me more storage by using my referral link (you get 10 more GBs as usual with these links): https://filen.io/r/146389f11f0e76cbc28ca267a34353a7 or plain link https://filen.io

SquirrelMail seems abandoned like most other FOSS projects though they did some work on PHP 8 recently on nightly snapshots for versions 1.4.23 and 1.5.2. Roundcube released 1.5.0 recently and their elastic theme looks nice. Rainloop community also looks promising and looked a bit on Afterlogic WebMail Lite.

A 'new' (from may this year) privilege escalation exploit in PHP-FPM has been found by a security firm. More information about CVE-2021-21703:

https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2021-21703

https://www.ambionics.io/blog/php-fpm-local-root

https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=81026

In PHP versions 7.3.x up to and including 7.3.31, 7.4.x below 7.4.25 and 8.0.x below 8.0.12, when running PHP FPM SAPI with main FPM daemon process running as root and child worker processes running as lower-privileged users, it is possible for the child processes to access memory shared with the main process and write to it, modifying it in a way that would cause the root process to conduct invalid memory reads and writes, which can be used to escalate privileges from local unprivileged user to the root user.

DirectAdmin has already patches out it seems, just update with the standard way via custombuild.

For debian, please track the progress here: https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2021-21703

The PHP team also announced that since PHP7.3 is close to being end of life, they will probably not be updating it and they will rely on third-party repomasters (like Ondrey) for keeping <php7.3 up to date.

Update asap people!

From March 1, 2022, developers and owners of messengers will have to identify their users in Russia.

Identification will be carried out by contacting the messenger to the mobile operator. The mobile operator must provide a response stating that this person has been identified within no more than 20 minutes.

If the mobile operator responds that he does not have such a user or his data is not verified, the messenger should not activate the user or allow him to send and receive messages.

For reference: this is the decree of the Government of Russia #1801 of 20/10/2021

Sure, you can say that is Russia with his dictator Putin but i doubt this is only Russia specific tendention.
So, what you think, are this is new trend in government war against freedom of people or not?

Hello. I have decided to hack your VPS and release malware on it. There is no way to get rid of it since you're using Frantech (BUYVM.NET // MY.FRANTECH.CA) , and they only use outdated software.

If you wish to get rid of it, you need to switch providers to some one else. Frantech allows ddos attacks and he hates black people. If you use him you support this as you are paying him monthly. I will expose your company as supporting racist people if u do not switch to a different provider, as Frantech owner hates ******. I attached screenshot proof of him saying it

Good day,

I am looking for a KVM AMD Ryzen VPS with NVME storage. Probably at least 4 cores.

However, I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest in terms of price...
I care more about how long they've been in business / that they have a wealth of experience from over the years / reputation that has been established.

Also, that their network (Datacenter / network) is exceptional.
In other words, that if I would download a large file from my VPS, that the mb / second rate would be higher than the average.

I'm located in Eastern USA but central USA would be fine too if speed / bandwidth is quality.

I've been with Knownhost for many years and they have been rock solid / know their stuff quite well (much experience under their belt).

However, they do not offer **KVM ** vps's with NVME as of yet.... I checked with them. I think theirs are openvz.

Thanks for your time / input!

AlmaLinux Announces ELevate Project to Migrate or Upgrade Any Red Hat Enterprise Linux-based Distribution
Open source initiative simplifies migrations from older CentOS versions to alternatives

ALL THINGS OPEN, RALEIGH, N.C., October 19, 2021 – The AlmaLinux OS Foundation introduced today the ELevate Project, an open source initiative to assist users perform migrations between different Red Hat Enterprise Linux based distributions, such as CentOS 7.x to AlmaLinux 8.x, Oracle Linux 8.x, or Rocky Linux 8.x. The announcement was made today at the All Things Open conference.

ELevate consists of two key components, enhancements to the open source Leapp project and a data library and toolset called the Package Evolution Service.

The enhancements to Leapp are currently contained on GitHub in the leapp-repository, where the AlmaLinux community has already added the necessary code to support RHEL derivatives and additional functionality needed to perform the migration. Work has already begun to have these changes merged upstream.

The Package Evolution Service (PES) includes a web interface for working with the data library that contains metadata which describes the list of configuration changes required for the migration. Developers and software vendors can create and submit PES data for their own applications or packages too, ensuring that migrations can be performed smoothly.

“Until today, it simply wasn’t possible to dream of migrations like these and that need has become very acute for CentOS users,'' said Jack Aboutboul, community manager for AlmaLinux. “This is a cause the whole community can get behind. We’re often asked if there are any plans for collaboration between the various downstream projects and this is a great example of something that everyone, AlmaLinux, Oracle and Rocky communities can contribute to. We’re working with upstream on the tooling while creating a PES that is free and open to all for this reason. Oracle was very gracious to contribute a nice chunk of the metadata set and our hope is that the Rocky community and developers will be receptive as well,” he said.

ELevate is open source, released under the Apache 2.0 License. You can learn more at ELevate site and on the AlmaLinux Wiki. Migrations can be done in place, meaning data and configuration files are preserved and please be mindful of best practices including backups and snapshots when making system changes.

About AlmaLinux
AlmaLinux OS is an open source, community-governed and forever-free enterprise Linux distribution. It is focused on long-term stability and delivering a robust production-grade platform. It is 1:1 binary compatible with RHEL(r) and pre-Steam CentOS.

The AlmaLinux OS falls under the purview of The AlmaLinux OS Foundation, which is a 501(c)(6) non-profit created for the benefit of the AlmaLinux OS community.

I often use 2600:: to test IPv6 connectivity, and I remember Google DNS was 2460:4860:4860::8888
